Wow so you live in Minneapolis Ron? I have a great musician friend who's just moved back to there. Maybe I'll visit you one day in the future. Do you know Prince? :banana

-- Thanks Paul! It's gotten a bit too big, with the attendant problems, but still is a pretty nice area.

-- Chris! I grew up - so to speak, hahaha - in "Mpls" (abbreviation for Minneapolis) and lived there most of my life. I've lived in a Minneapolis burb for a few years now, though.

Prince? lol - I still have a few albums of his, but he's passe even here nowadays. Dylan is from Minnesota - the northern part of the state - but he lived and gigged in Mpls before moving on, I believe the locals might think that's cooler the the artist formerly known as "relevant". I did meet Princes' early manager once.

As I sez, Mpls (and even St.Paul) is still a fine place, but I think lost some of it's charm to growth. It was better as a "big farm town" rather than a mid-size metropolis! I imagine your friend could tell you about all the great things about the area, hahaha.

Of course, the above pics just tell a part of the story. A running Minnesota joke is that we have have two seasons - July and Winter. Or "road repair and Winter". A bit of an exaggeration, but we do see a whole lot of this:

Another cool place in town - from the fun site James Lileks - Minneapolis

Cocktails, bowling, and the coolest damn sign in the entire state. This is about the best example of this style of design in town, and it's a miracle it's lasted.

So Dylan is from Minneapolis? Do you mean the old guy Bob?

And what is Minneapolis 'burb'?

What's the live music scene like there?

Am I asking you too many questions???

Yeah, it's great if someone else gets to shovel the snow - where I live the caretakers do that heh heh heh! :b In downtown Mpls (& St.Paul) we have "skyways" connecting buildings so folks can walk around downtown with more ease when the weather is *unique*. They snake all over downtown, the first one was built about 1960, I think -

Inside one skyway, looking down the street toward another skyway a block away.

There's some nice Minneapolis/snow pics here Minneapolis - Winter & Snow. They're kinda big to include a lot in a thread, here's a few thumbnail sized ones:

Nope, an average guy actually, haha. His name is Owen Husney.

He was born and raised in Hibbing, Minnesota, an old mining town in northern Minnesota. Mpls is in the southern half of the state. But he lived and played in the "west bank" and "Dinkytown" areas of Minneapolis, close to the University of Minnesota and where there used to be quite a few beatnik/hippy coffeehouses. More than you'll ever wanna know about this at Rake magazine. You could also do a mecca to his home town of Hibbing. Maybe sample the fine haute cuisine of "Zimmy's Grill" (Dylan's real name - Robert Zimmerman). From the menu - Hard Rain Hamburger, "Forever Young" Veggie Burger, "Tangled Up In" Gyros, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" Pasta, "Like A Rolling Stone" Shrimp Prima Vera, etc. No, I'm not kidding, lol. Zimmy's Grill - the menu.

A suburb! Finding Minneapolis in the approx center of the map, if you look below that to where the "airplane" is, that's my general area. (in da 'burbs!!) the map is of the larger Minneapolis/St.Paul urban area.

Wow, that question could take up a lotta room to answer! It's cool, pretty inventive - but I think some of the uniqueness also got lost as the area grew. Still alive and kickin', tho! In the 90's I helped a bud who produced/directed a TV show that featured local bands. It was shown on our PBS (Public Broadcasting System) affilliate and I believe it got some airing in Europe. The program was called "What" and it was great exposure to misc music. I think he's working on a new music TV program, he sent me a tape of the pilot shoot and it looks like it might be interesting. Here a local publication called, apropriately enough, Minnesota Music Directory that has a lot of skinny on regional groups, agencies, labels and so on.

Nawww!! hmmmm...but maybe *that* question might be too much!! hahahaha!

Wow! Ron!! You're a good tourist guide for your city!! hahahahahahha Now I know so much more!! I can impress my friend who's moved back there! Skyways are very popular in USA aren't they? We have a few here in HK - stops you from walking about in great heat... I imagine it's the opposite reason over there!!! hahahaha I've actually seen Bob Dylan in concert a few years ago, when he started playing All along the Watchtower as an encore - my friends' started laughing when I said - Oh he's doing a Hendrix number now! hahahahahahhaah You're verylucky to have a great music scene!! :banana

Well, you paid for the deluxe three hongkie tour!!

I think other places have adopted the idea, but it's still not real common. As far as I know they originated in Minnesota - mostly due to the frosty winters, where the average temp range is about -22 to -4 C. Today was a fine summer day, with a high temp of 28 C and a bit on the muggy side.

The nice thing about the skyways is that you don't have to bundle up to go outside in the winter between buildings. For people who work downtown, that's a big plus. Nice when it's hot outside, too - but it really hits you when you leave the air-conditioning.

Hahaha - I've heard that Dylan really liked Hendrix's version of it and likes to use the Hendrix arrangement more than his original version when he performs.

But ya know, even in winter, people still have their fun. I'm not at all into the winter stuff - skiing, skating, etc - I like to make a snowman, tho. But across the river in St.Paul they have the Winter Carnival every year. They often build an "ice Castle", which has been beautiful and impressive some years!

Ice Castles at the Winter Carnival

Being somewhat brighter than their fellow Minnesotans across the river, Minneapolis folks have their big deal - the Aquatennial celebration- in the summer. The Aquatennial celebrates living in the "city of lakes" and all things water!

One of the popular events of the Aquatennial is this coming Sunday - The MIlk Carton Boat Race. Again - no, I'm not kidding - people race boats that they made from milk cartons. hahaha - it draws a lot of spectators, too!

Ron!! I've never ever made a snowman !!! It doesn't snow here in HK - people grab their cameras in winter if there's a possibility of frost :) That Ice Castle certainly looks impressive!!

MILK CARTON BOAT RACE?!?!?! hahahahahhaa So what does your boat look like then Ron???!?!
