my underblurb should be...

"Some guitarist from Hollywood"

Think you could fix that for me? And please tell Mike to leave it alone from now on.

Thanks!

Larree, I'd suggest that it's wise to have "neutral grounds" - that is, places where a person sets aside beefs and appreciates the input of people with whom s/he will otherwise disagree with elsewhere.

To everything there is a season, as the saying goes - there are places where having at it tooth and nail is the normal and accepted order of the day. Some noses will get outta joint in such places - but it goes with the nature of that particular kind of territory.

There are other spots (like here at Blah-Blah-Blah) where folks who might not have a whole lot in common philosophically, politically or otherwise can share thoughts and ideas that hopefully serve a positive purpose, educate , to pass the time or just give others a laugh.

I think knowing to differentiate between such places and times is a good thinng. There are many stories that illustrate this - even in such unexpected places as the carnage of the battlefield. This is one example, told by a fellow whose father had told him from the days of World War I:

"I think the most touching war story I know was one my father told me about a long time ago. It was the day before Christmas during the first World War, and the Americans were trying to take a hill. The Germans were defending it with vigor. Gradually the day turned into twilight, and the skies darkened. The blackness of the evening put a lull in the fighting and things became quiet, with each side waiting for the other to make a move.

Our men had built a long trench, and most of the men were lined up against the wall. They were eating their rations, and smoking. One of the men said, “It’s Christmas Eve”. Then, softly, one of the men started singing “Silent Night”. One by one the men joined in, and the soon our men in an adjoining fox hole were singing along with their buddies. Someone started singing Oh little town of Bethlehem. Then they went back to Silent Night. Another sound drifted up from the other side of the hill. The Germans were singing along with them, although they sang in German. The voices of our soldiers and the voices of the German soldiers swelled and joined in perfect harmony to give thanks for the birth of Christ. Tough veteran soldiers had tears running down their cheeks. The tough profanity speaking Sarge was singing in harmony through his tears.

No more shots were fired that night, nor were any fired on Christmas day. More songs were sung – if both sides knew the tunes, they joined in. If they did not, they respectfully waited until the song was done, before starting one of their own. When Christmas day turned into Christmas night, one last song was sung on both sides of the hill. It was Auld Lang Syne – “Should Old aquaintence be forgot” –etc. My Dad said that every soul on that Battlefield, even those that were not of the Christian faith seemed to know that God was with them for that Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

On the 26th day of December fighting was renewed. The Germans seemed to have lost their vigor, and were retreating. The tough sarge was charging up the hill when he came face to face with a German. Both guns were swinging up, ready to fire, when a tossed grenade landed near them. Both men were knocked to the ground, and both suffered leg wounds from the shrapnel.

Neither sustained death wounds, but both were unable to continue fighting.

They lay there, face to face, stunned for a few minutes. Then as both struggled to get up, the Sarge reached for his rifle. The German had managed to get to his knees, and offered his hand to the American. They helped each other up while the guns lay on the ground. Together, hanging on to each other, they made it to a nearby tree , and sat propped up by the tree trunk to wait for the medics. When rescue finally came, the men were laughing and trying to talk to each other with their fractured English and German languages. The Germans rescued their man, and before long the Americans came for theirs. The two enemies parted from each other with a handshake, and a wish for each other’s health. I have always loved that story, and at the time my Dad told it, it was said to be a true story."
