I'm wanting to buy a Bass guitar. I'm on a budget and want something under a grand, has to be four strings, with some nice sustain and bass sound. I want something simular to what The Cure use or New Order. I was thinking of getting a Aria TAB-60 www.ariausa.com/series/ta...b60.htmlor a Fender Delux Zone Basswww.musiciansfriend.com/s..._id/54591. Maybe even a Ibanez EDB600 www.musiciansfriend.com/s...e_id/39686

I got a Fender Jazz Deluxe (new around $800 US) and it is simply an awesome instrument. Plays well -- killer tone. For the money, I'd go with the Fender (obviously). BUT! Play each one in the store before you buy it. There are going to be tonal variations in the woods.

Happy thumpin'!

Theo

well i got some idea how to play it when i need to. i bought mine for £60 in a second hand shop. never changed the strings, and it's been used on every recording i've made in recent years. i usually record it a fairly low volume through a cheap acoustic practise amp and pump it up in the mix, but i never add any fx. it just has a nice sound.

Jazz or Precision??

Depends upon the sound you're after. Jazz is two pickup, bridge pickup is bright, so the Chris Squire or Geddy Lee kind of sound can happens a lot like a Rick 4001 with a pick and the right amp (like Carvin's red spot series). My 5 stringer is a Jazz. When finger plucked or slapped/popped it is a great funk/soul bass

The Precision is a single split pickup with two poles per string, very warm, punchy when finger plucked (pedaled), and great sustain due to the lack of phasing issues caused by multi-pickups...my fretless is a Precision, circa 1972- I always loved the sound of this one through the Ampeg SVT 8x10 cabs...John Paul Jones of Zep was a P-bass man///

Mine is a Jazz Deluxe -- dual active pickups (needs a 9-volt battery). It's not at bright as a regular Jazz and has a nice punchy sound. Pairs up nicely with my Fender Bassman 60.

What I did was just go down to the music store and try all the basses in my price range and picked the one that sounded/felt the best to me.
