I find it interesting that the same topic gets such different repsonses. On 1Sound it was brought up by Von and the responses were at a much higher level of discourse.
I find it repugnant that much of society worships people that have so little real substance. I feel that the American society has, in the main, perverted values. We seem to worship wealth and fame beyond what people contribute to society in other fields.
I brought BritTwit up because I saw an interview with her on TV and it really depressed and angered me that such a person get such attention. The topic is more extensive than just her. She is merely an example of the screwed up values many people have.
Steve H brought the point home it with the following:
"The philosopher/sociologist Zygmunt Bauman relates all this to the demise of skilled work and stable community and the dominance of the mass media. Not too long ago young people would want to be like their fathers, mothers and older peers, who had valuable skills and cultural knowledge. When my friends and I were young, our heroes were Cyril Pearson, a local miner who played cricket and once hit the ball out of the ground, across a main road and across a block of houses on the other side, and Robin Herd, who only had three fingers but could play Buddy Guy solos on his electric guitar. My biggest hero was my dad, a 300lb blacksmith/industrial plumber whom could make beautiful wrought-ironware and weld two pieces of metal together to within a thousandth of an inch where you literally couldn't see the join. Now, none of that is valuable, and we seek a vicarious existence through media figures in a world where getting famous has replaced things like welding as a vital skill for survival and prosperity."

Personally, I think Britney's performance in that Pepsi commercial where she went through all those costume changes was spectacular. She looked great in those vintage fashions!
